  • At Arthur Andrew, we exclusively use tape. Why? Andy is a hair system wearer and has tried both methods himself. Tape gives you the most control and is kinder to your scalp. Education is key to us - we teach you how to apply the tape so you’re able to do it yourself, on your schedule, fitting in with your lifestyle. Gluing your hair system means you’re reliant on a provider to ensure the strength of the bond. Through experience, gluing can often create itchiness and scalp irritation over long periods of wear.

  • Due to variations in quality, we source all of our client’s hair systems. This also ensures if there are any issues, we can arrange a replacement for you.

  • Ensuring that you follow the correct aftercare procedure, a hair system can last anywhere from 2 – 6 months. After this, it is advised that they are replaced to keep them looking in the best condition.

  • Our stylists have years of experience wearing and cutting hair systems. We will give you all the tools to walk away and maintain a natural looking hair system. If you use the tools we give you, and keep up with maintenance, then hair systems are undetectable.

  • On the day of your installation, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about removing, re-taping, re-applying and styling your hair system. This is all backed up with our digital masterclass ‘Tape 101’. Tape 101 has everything you need (in both written and video format).

  • We recommend that you shampoo your hair infrequently as it disturbs the knots and can cause quicker shedding. Wash once every 3-4 weeks (usually when you remove to re-tape). In between that you can rinse with warm water and apply hair treatments (making sure you rinse treatments thoroughly out of your hair).

Environmental factors wil determine whether washing is required more often - if you’re a regular gym-goer or you work in a kitchen for instance.

  • The right hairbrush is so important when wearing a hair system! To avoid tearing or damaging the membrane of your hair system, Arthur Andrew highly recommends clients to use a vent brush that has nodules on the end or a wide-tooth comb. You’ll receive a brush as part of your after-care pack when you have your hair system installed.

Gently brush through your hair system to detangle and style hair. Start from the ends of the hair and work your way up to the root slowly. Make sure to never pull out tangles!

  • If you need to style and brush your hair system but aren’t washing your hair that day, spray some water or use a hydrating spray to rework the hair into your desired style.

Hair systems tend to hold their style so frequent straightening and use of heat aren’t necessary. The less heat used, the better condition your hair system will be.

  • A hair system needs to be removed and both the scalp and system cleaned every 3 - 6 weeks. This depends on how often you exercise and how often you sweat.

Tape bonding refreshing is determined by the method you’re using please seek guidance from your hair system provider.

  • Yes, you can but we recommend you don’t as this will mean you’ll need to re-tape and wash your hair system more often. Sweat reacts with tape and can cause irritation. A lot of our clients wear hats.

We also recommend removing your hair system at night. This reduces wear and tear while you sleep. If you really want to sleep with your hair system on, we highly recommend getting yourself a silk pillowcase.

This information is all contained in Tape 101 which you will be given when you order a hair system.

  • Chlorine is damaging to your hair system (just like it is to natural hair) so to protect your hair system, we recommend you use either a swimming cap or apply a generous amount of organic conditioner before getting into the pool, lake or sea. This is so salt water or chlorine takes the conditioner out of your hair rather than the moisture or hydration you have spent time applying. It’s then important to apply more after.

Ultimately, water is not our friend. It is important to freshly tape your hair system prior to swimming. Afterwards, you’ll need to remove the tape, rinse the chlorine (or saltwater) out and deeply condition your hair system before reapplying. This is because chlorine or saltwater can react with the tape and cause irritation.

  • This really depends on how you follow the maintenance instructions i.e. if your tape is 4 days old and already a bit loose, and you head out into a Wellington gale – there is a chance of it blowing off. If, however, you have freshly taped your hair system – go run wild! We have an Instagram reel of when a cyclone hit Wellington and Andy tested it. It stayed on.

  • Remember to treat your hair system with care – the more gentle you are the longer it will last.

    • Try your best to avoid saunas and steam rooms as the humidity will affect your hair system tape

    • If you’re heading on to a warmer and sunnier climate, consider wearing a hat to keep your systems protected in the sun and to minimise colour fade and dehydration.
